The Fediverse--a social media multiverse is on its way

The Fediverse enables cross-platform social media communication, allowing users to connect across different networks like email does across providers.

The Fediverse--a social media multiverse is on its way

Step aside, Marvel Cinematic Universe - there's a new kind of multiverse in the works.

What's the Fediverse, you ask?

Its name is a clever marriage between 'federation' and 'universe.'

Through the Fediverse, social media servers share information with each other. This means users can connect, discover and communicate across platforms, so long as they're compatible.

Let's simplify this. Think about how email works.

If you use Yahoo, but your friend uses Outlook, you can still contact each other because both platforms conform to the same protocol.

Most social networks don't do this and work within their own protocol. But, the Fediverse could change this through its 'open social networking' protocol.

This could mean, for example, your Threads posts could show up on Tumblr. Or you could potentially use a Reddit profile to follow Pinterest users.

Right now, the Fediverse is a collective of small social networks, and it's actually been around for a few years. But only recently has it been adopted by Threads, which is Meta's first app to be compatible with it.

The Fediverse is in its infancy right now. But if there's a path forward for open social networking, then a bright future could be ahead for cross-platform marketing.

In theory, a well-functioning and broadly sweeping Fediverse would grant you new streamlined ways to span across platforms. Of course, this would make it easier for you to reach new audiences and expand your community.

There's not much we can encourage you to do for now, other than to keep your eyes peeled for how this goes. That, and maybe use Threads a bit more to get a feel for what the future might hold 👀
